Torpedo Junction: Beneath the Southern Cross, Part I is the first installment of simulations of the Guadalcanal Campaign and other naval/air battles in 1942. Torpedo Junction includes the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz, and several other scenarios occuring in the eastern portion of the Solomons -- around the area known as "Torpedo Junction".

I've been calling BTSC "Flat Top on steroids". The scale is 16.8 nautical miles per hex; the map covers from Shortland Island to Esperitu Santo, and Off Board Movement Mat allow players to move between the map and Rabaul, Truk, Noumea, Fiji, and Townsville.

The game revolves around three goals: "Fuel 'em, Find 'em, Strike 'em". You will need to track fuel status of your task forces, and might have to find an oiler at an inconvenient moment. Your carriers and long-range scout planes (PBYs, H6Ks, and H8Ks) search for the other side, and when you find them, launch strikes to take out the enemy carriers.

The game includes 1.3" x .65" counters for every warship and most auxiliaries. Plane counters are .625" square, and most game markers are either that size or 1/2" square.

Each turn is one hour of time. Each hex is 16.8 nautical miles; ground units are mainly regiments and each step is roughly a company. Plane types are rated for movement and endurance, and all planes can add extra bursts of speed--at the risk of losing endurance. Planes also have various combat modifiers.

The game includes numerous player aid cards as well as a 16-page Charts & Tables booklet.
