1889 Berlin, an 18xx game in the series originated by Francis Tresham's 1829, is set in Berlin Germany.

In 1889 Berlin, 2-5 players will use money to purchase shares in railroad companies during Share Dealing Rounds. Between subsequent Share Dealing Rounds, railroad corporations then conduct operations on the game board, with the decisions being made by the player who is the major share holder. The game simulates the progression of railroad development during an historic period in Berlin (1889 - 1989). Old trains become obsolete while the revenue earnings from cities grows over time. Players will try to purchase the most profitable shares at the right times of the game to maximize earnings in dividends and stock value gains. In the end, the player with the highest value of personal cash and held stocks is the winner.

Unique mechanisms in 1889 Berlin:

At the beginning of phase 1945 (end of WWII) players remove some brown tiles - simulating bombardment of the city
At the beginning of phase 1961 (building the wall) the map is split by wall tiles (functioning as "edge of the map")
Companies in West-Berlin can't operate in East-Berlin (phases 1961 - 1989)
Companies in East-Berlin can operate in West-Berlin (phases 1961 * 1989) but had to end in their station token or loop back to East-Berlin
Companies in East-Berlin use a common pool of trains an had to reach a given target value ("Planwirtschaft") to get a new train or loose a train
