A Vanguard paves the way for the rest of the forces in a faction. Bound by honour and pride, their duels are often the first of conflicts between two opposing forces in an arcane war. Their victories amplify morale and their defeats ominous signs for their Battle Mage masters …

TKG ARENA: The Vanguard Duels is a game set up for 2 players.

Components required for this game:

STANDARD DECK (DECK): 1
PLAYING CARD STAND (STAND): 2
OINKS: 1 from each element

Winning Condition

The player with the most HONOUR points wins the game when it ends.

Ending Condition

The game ends when one of the players reaches 12 or more HONOUR points.

Setup

A player starts the game by designating the following areas: A draw deck area O, a discard area X and five adjoining spaces that is designated A, B, C, D and E on the card stand. The players should be seated facing each other with sufficient space between them to place the trumping order represented by the spaces T, 1, 2 and 3.

X A B C D E O

Determine the starting player by taking turns to draw cards from a shuffled standard deck. The player who draws the highest face value starts first. In case of a tie, the tied players keep drawing till the tie is broken with a player drawing a higher face value. The other player decides the initial trumping order.
All 36 cards are re-shuffled and each player receives 18 cards faced down as a drawing stack at their respective area O.
Each player draws 5 cards from the top of the draw stack and places them on the stand one by one in the sequence drawn. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th card drawn should be located on the stand at positions A, B, C, D and E respectively. All the front facing contents of the cards face the player and the backs of the cards towards the opponent.
Players are not allowed to switch the positions of the cards freely during play.
The area X is used as a space to place discarded cards during play.
The Oinks representing the 4 elements will be placed in the spaces T, 1, 2 and 3 to indicate the priority of the elements. The trumping element has priority over all other elements during play.

T 1 2 3

E.g. Fire (Ashw) is in the T space – Any Fire (Ashw) card will beat cards of any other element, when both cards are Fire (Ashw) cards, the card with the higher face value will win. Moving forward, let’s assume that Water (Esbner), Earth (Ohif) and Air (Ukelele) are in positions 1, 2 and 3 respectively, this means when face values of opposing cards are the same, the tie is broken using this priority: All Water (Esbner) cards will prevail against Earth (Ohif) cards which will prevail against Air (Ukelele) cards. Water (Esbner) cards will also prevail against Air (Ukelele) cards.

On each player’s turn

The player can choose to execute ONE of the two following actions.

End the round immediately by discarding 2 cards from his/her draw stack at O. All players proceed to scoring the round. This move cannot be chosen when there are less than 2 cards in the draw stack at O and 5 cards in the discard space X.
Draw the top card from the draw stack at O and may choose to either discard it into X or replace it with one of the cards placed in A, B, C, D or E. In this case, the replaced card goes into the discard space X. 3 further possibilities stem from here.
If the discarded card into X has an odd face value (1, 3, 5, 7, 9), the player must reveal one of his/her cards by placing it face up in front of card stand while maintaining its position relative to the other unrevealed cards.
If the discarded card into X has an even face value (2, 4, 6, 8), the player must reveal the top card of his draw stack at O and keep it face up until it is drawn.
If the discarded card into X is of the same element as the immediate previous discard card, the player can choose to re-arrange all the elements in the trumping order.

At any point of time, if the draw stack at O has no more cards, the last turn takes place followed by scoring of the round. Otherwise, the other player takes his/her turn and the game proceeds.

Scoring

When each round ends, players will pit their cards against each other in the respective spaces on the card stand. E.g. Corresponding cards in space A of the players are compared, followed by those in spaces B, C, D and E. Trumping priority are resolved first. This is followed by face value priority. Cards with higher face values win those of lower values. Ties in face value priority are resolved by spaces 1, 2 and 3 in the trumping order explained earlier. For each card that has higher priority over his/her opponent’s respective card, a victory is scored.

Over 5 spaces, the player with more victories will claim HONOUR points equal to the number of discarded cards in the opponent’s discard space X. If the ending condition is met, the game ends and the winner is the one with most HONOUR points. Otherwise, the HONOUR points are recorded, all cards (inclusive of discarded or unused cards) in the game are re-collected and the set up for a new round begins.
