Enlightened is a climbing card game inspired by traditional Chinese favorites like Big Two, Da Lao Er, and Zheng Fen. Players vie to be the first to empty their hand, but with a unique twist - there's no trump suit! Instead, you'll harness the dynamic interplay of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
Each element has its place in the cycle, mirroring the balance found in nature. The Wu Xing destruction cycle determines the elemental ranking: Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood, Wood parts Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water extinguishes Fire.
Objective & Scoring:
The object of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your hand before any of your friends get rid of theirs. The faster you get rid of your cards, the higher your score will be. After one player has no more cards, the round ends immediately. The losing players count how many cards are left in their hands. The winner of the round receives a score equal to the sum of all other players' remaining cards. The losers of the round score 0 points.
What is Enlightenment?
In the first round of the game, there is no enlightenment. In later rounds, the player who gets rid of all their cards first will be enlightened, which means they must offer their highest card to a player of their choice. Then that player can give any card they want in return to the enlightened player.
So, how do we play this?
Players aim to empty their hands first by playing increasingly powerful combinations. Cards rank by number and element, following the Wu Xing cycle. Play single cards, pairs, three-of-a-kinds, and five-card combinations. Unique "Illumination" combos can break the cycle. The first to play all cards wins the round and scores points.
