Battle Of The Kacoon Sea (空母対空母 決戦カクーノ沖海戦) (Aircraft carrier vs. aircraft carrier decisive battle Battle of Kakuno Gulf) is an early game from the Japanese doujin game publisher KogeKogeDo. It was produced as two versions: Empire and American. A player could play the game as either side, or combine the two versions to play a full game.
The game is based upon the Battle of the Coral Sea, a significant naval battle in the Pacific theatre during World War II. During this battle, the two navies did not actually make contact. Instead, both sides used aircraft launched from carriers to attack the other side. The game simulates this form of combat.
The game is packaged in a large plastic envelope which has the rules, a large playing sheet representing the carriers in an abstract form, and a set of cards for aircraft from each side. The technical drawings of the aircraft are taken from Wikipedia Creative Commons.
In the game, a player must position aircraft on their flight deck and send them up into formations, where they are met and countered by opposing aircraft. The player uses dice to resolve combat between the planes. Then the surviving aircraft must return and land safely. A player can only keep an aircraft in a holding pattern for one turn. If it cannot land after that, it is lost into the sea.
Each player has fighter aircraft and bomber aircraft. The objective is to get the bombers past the fighter defence and to sink the opposing carriers for victory.
