Have you ever wondered just how far you can push a game before it cracks? Have you ever wondered just how much milk a corporation can milk from its cash cow? Ever asked yourself how many mechanics you can add to a game before it is not itself anymore? This game is a research project into just that.
In 1971, a card game was released which firmly solidified itself as the quintessential card-shedding game of its generation. This game was Uno, and its monumental success as a game has seen it reprinted and remolded in innumerable multitudes. Nowadays you can find Uno fit to whatever shell your heart desires: Uno with some extra cards; Uno video games; Uno with some extra fundamental mechanic which makes the gameplay completely different; Uno with necessary machines that supplement gameplay; even Uno with unique roles and collectible card packs are finding their way to stores.
In 2024, a humble game designer laughed to himself after thinking about this and jokingly asked, "So, how would Uno play if you put every single special card and rule in one version?"
...And so it was, after months of discovering and cataloguing over 800 versions of the classic card-shedder, Chemicards was born. First person to shed their whole hand of cards wins. The game is simple- or one would think. As it turns out, things get a little more complicated with well over one thousand playable cards to shed.
Chemicards takes the classic card-shedding gameplay loop you are familiar with and dilutes it to a horrific sludge with dozens of new mechanics, hundreds of new specific rules and thousands of new cards. The entire game is being developed with as little physical bloat as possible, transforming esoteric and weird mechanics into new cards or dice rolls for as succinct a gameplay loop as possible.
