Scipio is the first cog in the wheel that evolved the Roman army away from its highly linear velites-hastati-principes system to a more sectional and individual approach that would eventually become the cohort system of the age of Marius. His overseas victories and conquests also opened Rome's eyes to the possibilities of empire."
