While the Austrian Empire was in the throes of a succession crisis and was threatened by other countries, "Frederick the Great" (Friedrich II of Prussia) seized the Austrian province of Silesia. When the Austrians did react, they placed an army between Frederick and Prussia. Frederick turned and approached the Austrians in a snow storm. He had to defeat the Austrian army to re-establish his lines of communication.
