Shitty Werewolf (2020)

Shitty Werewolf is a combination of lowbrow art and high concept meta commentary on the classic social party game Werewolf. If you know how to play Werewolf, you already know how to play Shitty Werewolf, but here’s a quick rundown of the rules… Everyone is secretly a villager or a werewolf, and over a series of night/day rounds, the werewolves will secretly eat villagers at night while the whole town will execute someone every day. The villagers are trying to kill all the werewolves while the werewolves are trying to eat enough villagers to outnumber them before they are executed. The game requires a moderator to run things and with special powers can get really complicated, but the core is a very simple game based around arguing with each other. Unlike traditional Werewolf, the roles/powers in Shitty Werewolf frequently break not just the conventions of the genre but also the basic play loop of the game itself all while exploring the social dynamics present in all group interactions. With roles like the “Socially Awkward Friend Who Hates Werewolf but Didn’t Want to Make a Fuss About It” and the “Mansplainer” games can start to unravel around the all-too-real social conventions and conversational baggage we bring to the experience of playing Werewolf. But this high mindedness is coupled with roles like the “Swearwolf” and the “Raccoon” that make it clear that this is still a game about being weird together, even if you might end up with some deep thoughts along the way. —description from the designer
