Feljong (2024)

Feljong is a standalone game created with the aim of teaching the basic fundamentals of Riichi Mahjong (also known as Japanese mahjong) over several complexity levels, by using a deck of cards with the same configuration as a set of Riichi Mahjong tiles. The standard game has 4 levels - you can proceed to the next level, or stay in the current level until you feel comfortable to add more rules (usually by adding more Yakus - ways of getting points in the game). Feljong also comes with the advanced rules of Riichi Mahjong, using cards instead of the standard tiles as components.

Following the same idea as Riichi Mahjong, in each round, 4 players are trying to win by forming a valid hand with at least one Yaku (a hand condition required to score points). These winning hands usually have 4 groups (melds) of 3 cards, either sequences or triplets, and a pair. However you only have 13 cards in your hand, so you will need to use an extra card discarded by a player, or a card drawn from the deck, in order to win.
On your turn you simply draw a card and discard a card, but there are some ways you can use other players' discards to play groups in front of you, though you can also choose to stay with your hand fully closed until it's time to win. Whoever manages to win a round receives points from the other players, either from everyone if you win using a card from the deck, or just from the player who discarded the card you needed.
